Wheelchair-accessible mats now available at Dauphin Island's West End Beach
Recently, the MBNEP had the honor of presenting to the citizens of Coastal Alabama a new way for those with physical challenges to get out on the beach and into the sand— two extensive ADA/wheelchair compliant beach mats on the north and south sides of the western end of Dauphin Island. The project is a collaboration with the Town of Dauphin Island and the Krewe of Kindness, a disability-affirming organization. The grand opening included remarks from Roberta Arena Swann, Director of the MBNEP; Jeff Collier, Mayor of the Town of Dauphin Island; and Jenni Grimes Zimlich, President of Kreme of Kindness. Ribbon cutting was conducted by Delaney Zimlich. Roberta Swann also broke some news at the event, announcing that disability access tools such as these will now be an enduring component of the MBNEP stewardship agenda, with new mats to be planned for other locations at coastal access points in the future. Many thanks to Madison Blanchard for her management oversight bringing this project to fruition.
