Our Principles
The MBNEP works within a set of core principles to achieve our goals.
Those who live it know it.
Residents, fishermen, boaters, scientists, hunters, and others understand our environmental priorities and challenges better than anyone. They know what works and what doesn’t. MBNEP values and seeks out their input to guide our work.
Economic opportunities must be available.
The health of our coast drives Alabama’s economy through trade at the Port of Mobile, fishing, tourism, hunting, and construction. Many jobs rely on clean water, healthy fish and wildlife, and diverse habitats.
Environmental stewardship is a team effort.
Environmental stewardship is a team effort. Everyone benefits from a healthy coast. Working together balances economic growth and environmental protection. To achieve this, MBNEP convenes a 300-person management conference. This unique structure unites government, citizens, academia, industry, non-profits, and grassroots groups, giving leaders and community members a key role in managing our coast’s assets.
It happens in the river, in the sea, and on the street.
Communities are a first line of defense when it comes to protecting what matters most to those living in Coastal Alabama. MBNEP partners with communities to raise awareness, educate, and involve residents, businesses, and visitors to help keep our estuaries, bays, and watersheds healthy and thriving.
Guided by these enduring principles, the MBNEP did extensive research in the Coastal Alabama community to identify 6 Core Values to shape our work.
