The Mobile Bay National Estuary Program (MBNEP) announces completion of the Dauphin Island Watershed Management Plan (WMP). The WMP is a comprehensive plan that outlines strategies for protecting and restoring Dauphin Island. Chris Warn of Environmental Science Associates presented an overview of the plan at the MBNEP Project Implementation Committee meeting last week.
The WMP was developed over two years with input from a wide range of stakeholders, including residents, businesses, government agencies, and environmental organizations. The plan identifies a number of priority areas for action, including improving water quality, conservation and restoration of critical habitats, preserving cultural heritage, enhancing community and environmental resilience, and providing for public access.
“The Dauphin Island Watershed Plan is a critical tool for protecting our coastal resources,” said MBNEP Public Sector Program Lead, Christian Miller. “This plan will help us to identify and address the most pressing challenges facing the Island and will be instrumental in efforts to preserve this special place for future generations.”
The Dauphin Island WMP is available for download.

November 8, 2021: The Mobile Bay National Estuary Program hosted an open house on November 8, 2021, to discuss watershed planning efforts on Dauphin Island and to solicit public input on issues, challenges, and opportunities for inclusion in the Dauphin Island Watershed Management Plan. Practitioners from other organizations were also present to discuss their specific projects on Dauphin Island and solicit public input. The watershed planning team will be using the public input received to guide the development of the watershed management plan as they transition to identifying management measures and implementation strategies to address the issues that were identified at the meeting. March 26, 2021: The Mobile Bay National Estuary Program (MBNEP) has partnered with Environmental Science Associates (ESA), Thompson Engineering, and Barry Vittor & Associates to develop a Watershed Management Plan (WMP) for Dauphin Island. The purpose of the WMP is to guide watershed resource managers, policy makers, community organizations, and citizens in protecting the environmental and cultural integrity of the Island to ensure that these resources are preserved for future generations.
The WMP will chart a conceptual course for improving or protecting the things people value most about living along the Alabama coast, including: Water Quality; Fish and Wildlife; Environmental Health and Resilience; Public Access; Heritage and Culture; and Beaches and Shorelines. Each WMP identifies issues and data gaps related to watershed conditions; provides an implementation program that recommends a prioritized list of actions to improve water quality, ecological integrity, and resiliency; and includes a project implementation schedule, interim milestones, ways to measure or monitor progress, an education/outreach plan, and identification of technical and financial resources needed to address implementation success.
October 2020: Aloe Bay Project Update - Over the past few months, the Aloe Bay project team and Steering Committee have been busy working on different aspects of the project. Much activity has taken place with research, defining engagement strategies, market analysis, and developing project goals. We are excited about the direction of the project and look forward to engaging the community again in a few short weeks to start illustrating the future of Aloe Bay. Since the kick-off event on June 25th, we have heard a few questions about Aloe Bay and we have developed the following FAQs to share with the community. If you have any other questions about Aloe Bay, we encourage you to visit the project website (www.aloebay.org) and click on the Questions tab at the top of the page. Also, if you know anyone else who would like to receive future updates about Aloe Bay, please tell them to visit the visit Keep in Touch tab at the top of the project website.
